CAMDEN – New Jersey's public schools must include historically accurate and culturally relevant instruction in Latino and Hispanic history from kindergarten through grade 12, according to a law signed by Gov. Phil Murphy on Monday.
The Latino population in New Jersey surged 27% between 2013 and 2023 and accounted for 22% of the total population, according to the U.S. Census Bureau's five-year American Community Survey.
In Camden, the Latino population accounted for 54% of the total population in 2023. The total of 38,756 – largely Puerto Rican and Dominican – was up 6% from 2013.
The state Board of Education will be required to adopt New Jersey Student Learning Standards in Social Studies that will include the contribution of the Latino and Hispanic population, according to the governor
