October is prime time in the autumn classical calendar, when almost all our major presenters offer tantalizing events.

For string quartet fans it’s a great couple of weeks, beginning with the launch of Friends of Chamber Music’s 78th season, which is dedicated, quite rightly, to the legacy of longtime stalwart Eric Wilson. The Aris Quartet , proteges of the legendary Berg Quartet, plays Mendelssohn, Ligeti and Beethoven, on the Friends’ traditional Tuesday evening, Oct. 14, 7:30 p.m., at the Vancouver Playhouse .

A few days later, the Jerusalem Quartet plays a Sunday matinee for the Vancouver Recital Society (3 p.m. at the Playhouse). The menu includes Haydn and Beethoven (his extraordinary Opus 130 quartet, plus an add-on in the form of Der Grosse Fugue). But my favourite is Janáč
