Catholic Charities of the Texas Panhandle is stepping in to help as the federal government shutdown, effective Oct. 1, leaves many federal workers in the region without pay.

The nonprofit announced Wednesday, Oct. 1 it will open its InterFaith Hunger Project pantry to furloughed employees, providing food boxes and pantry access.

“We know this shutdown is creating real hardship for families in our community,” said Jeff Gulde, executive director of Catholic Charities. “We want our federal employees to know they are not alone — we are here to help them through this.”

Furloughed workers must present a valid government ID, proof of furlough and basic personal information for eligibility. Verification is available Monday through Friday, 8-11 a.m. and 1-4 p.m.
