The Souris Cooperative Daycare was established in February of 1972. But the history of this grass-roots initiative began years before when a group of young mothers started their own daycare center and were able to employ seven full-time workers and provide day care from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m in the Souris community. This, for the small fee of $1.00 per day.

In those years the center saw programs such as a nursery school, infant, preschool and school age care.

In January 2004, a partnership between the Souris School and Souris Cooperative Daycare had created a before and after school-age program. Over the past two decades the number of programs, and the number of children has increased substantially, which prompted the Daycare Board and the School Division to jump on a provincial program
