WASHINGTON — The government shut down Wednesday after Congress missed the deadline to fund it. It's up to them now to agree on a spending bill, but that may not happen so quickly.

In order to pass a bill, both the House and Senate need to agree on it. While the Senate was back on the floor at 10 a.m. Wednesday, the House is scheduled to be out of session until next Tuesday. House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) said they would meet next at 3:30 p.m. Friday, however.

The last government shutdown was nearly seven years ago under President Donald Trump's first term. It started in December 2018 and lasted into 2019 for a full 34 days, making it the longest shutdown in American history. The majority of shutdowns have lasted just a few days.
