Washington ― Michigan Democrats and Republicans in Congress both blamed the opposing party for the partial shutdown of the U.S. government on Wednesday, as an estimated 750,000 federal workers were furloughed across the country and others were forced to keep working without pay.
Republicans blasted their Democratic counterparts for being "irresponsible" and reckless in allowing the shutdown to occur by spurning a so-called "clean" short-term bill. That package, which Senate Democrats blocked again Wednesday, would continue current spending levels and keep government operations running while allowing negotiations to continue.
