LYNCHBURG — Piece by piece and night after night, the runway at the Lynchburg Regional Airport is being milled up and repaved — only to be ready again by morning for air traffic.

This nightly work began June 1 and is expected to be complete by the end of October, airport director Cedric Simon said.

By the time the project is complete, the runway will be resurfaced with very little disruption to the operations of the airport, Simon said. Thus far, with just a month left on the contract, there has been just one 15-minute delay in reopening the runway.

Simon said the $15.3 million project, which includes a lighting upgrade, is funded by about $14 million in federal aviation funds, with the remainder coming from state and local funds through the Department of Aviation.
