The California DMV has unveiled new driver’s license and ID card designs, which include updated security features.

State officials began issuing the redesigned cards on Wednesday, Oct. 1, the DMV announced.

They include background images depicting “the unique beauty of the state’s landscape,” the agency said in a written statement.

But the change isn’t merely aesthetic, as the redesign also adds new high-tech security features.

“The new cards use next generation technology to enhance security and with a design that shows California’s iconic redwoods, poppies and coastline,” Gordon said.
