CHARLOTTE, N.C. — About 140,000 North Carolinians will not receive paychecks starting Wednesday after federal lawmakers failed to reach a budget deal before the midnight deadline on Tuesday.
Many of these non-essential government employees are expected to be furloughed . Essential personnel, like active-duty military members and Transportation Security Administration (TSA) agents, will be required to continue working. However, if the shutdown extends beyond two weeks, some may work without immediate pay.
Many federal benefits, like SNAP , have enough funding reserves to continue operating for months, but the furloughs could add pressure to already strained assistance programs.
