A recently-published study found an increased risk in hemorrhoids linked to smartphone use on the toilet.

The study, published by PLOS One, was able to find more than one-third of smartphone participants spent more than five minutes on the toilet per visit. That is compared to just 7.1% of participants who did not use a smartphone while on the toilet.

Hemorrhoids are swollen and inflamed veins in the rectum that can cause pain and discomfort during bowel movements. Dr. Abinash Achrekar, KOAT and University of New Mexico health expert, explains how prolonged trips to the toilet can lead to hemorrhoids.
