Title: U.S. Approves Sale of Artillery Rocket Systems to Canada
WASHINGTON — The U.S. State Department has given the green light for the potential sale of M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems to Canada. The Defense Security Cooperation Agency, part of the U.S. Department of Defense, announced that the estimated cost of the sale is $1.75 billion. Lockheed Martin is identified as the principal contractor for this deal.
Canada has requested to purchase 26 of the High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems, commonly known as HIMARS, along with 132 Guided Multiple Launch Rocket Systems and additional equipment. The proposed sale is intended to enhance Canada’s military capabilities, aligning with U.S. foreign policy and national security goals.
According to the announcement, this sale will also strengthen Canada’s role in collective defense efforts in the Western Hemisphere and bolster deterrence in Europe through NATO. Prime Minister Mark Carney has committed to meeting Canada’s NATO defense spending target, which is set at two percent of the national gross domestic product, by the fiscal year 2025-26.
This development marks a significant step in U.S.-Canada defense relations, reflecting ongoing collaboration in military preparedness and strategic defense initiatives.
