Oregon’s public lands appear poised to stay open but at a reduced capacity during the federal government shutdown that began Oct. 1.
The outdoors or “open air” parts of Oregon’s national parks, forests and monuments appear likely to remain open while visitor's centers, interpretative tours and other services may be shut down.
“Park roads, lookouts, trails, and open-air memorials will generally remain accessible to visitors,” a Department of Interior memo outlining plans for a shutdown said. However, historical sites and museums, such as Lewis and Clark National Historic Park, will be gated and closed.
A spokesman for DOI said the agency would “share additional information about how we are implementing this plan at specific parks as it becomes available.”
