The San Diego Padres bounced back from a tough Game 1 loss as they knocked off the Chicago Cubs in Game 2 of the Wild Card Series Wednesday afternoon.

Craig Counsell’s decision to utilize an opener ultimately backfired in the first inning, as Andrew Kittredge gave up two hits and a sacrifice fly to Jackson Merrill to put the Padres up 1-0.

Manny Machado then provided key insurance runs in the fifth inning, hammering a home run to left field to give San Diego a 3-0 advantage that they would never relinquish.
