HOLLIS, N.H. —

New Hampshire Gov. Kelly Ayotte is calling on lawmakers to get a deal done and bring an end to a federal government shutdown.

Two proposals failed Wednesday in the U.S. Senate, one from Democrats and one from Republicans, meaning that government services that aren't considered essential will remain closed for now.

Most Democratic lawmakers say they won't consider any plan that doesn't address health care subsidies. A few Democrats broke ranks to vote on what Republicans are calling a "clean" spending plan focused on essential services, but those votes weren't enough to get it passed.

New Hampshire officials said about 6,000 federal employees are working without pay.
