Leaning into her career in public service has been a cornerstone of Rep. Mikie Sherrill’s campaign in this year’s gubernatorial election.

From an announcement video wearing her pilot jacket to ads at the helm of a helicopter, Sherrill, a resident of Montclair and the Democratic standard-bearer, has not shied away from highlighting her years as a pilot in the U.S. Navy.

But her rival, Republican Jack Ciattarelli, whose campaign had obtained a copy of Sherrill's naval service file, wants more information about Sherrill's record — particularly about her days as a midshipman at the U.S. Naval Academy. State and federal Republicans have joined Ciattarelli in that call.
