After spending nearly 1,000 days in a hospital, a 5-year-old girl from Utah returned home following a successful heart transplant surgery.

Sienna Barton, from Saratoga Springs, was born with a congenital heart defect called hypoplastic left heart syndrome, according to Intermountain Health , one of the locations where she was treated.

As the Mayo Clinic explains, the rare condition occurs when when the left side of the heart doesn't develop fully and can't pump blood well.
