Detroit voters will choose a new mayor on Oct. 4 in what is truly a transitional election. Mike Duggan has served in that role for 12 years and is the politician most closely identified with the city's ongoing revival.

Duggan decided not to seek a fourth term and is instead making an independent bid for governor.
