A fire at First Christian Church sent dark smoke billowing out of the roof on Wednesday afternoon.

A 911 call at 3:06 p.m. Oct. 1 was the first report of the fire, according to Bloomington Fire Department Deputy Chief Max Litwin. The first fire units were dispatched at 3:07 p.m. and arrived at the church at 3:09 p.m. He said there were people in the building when the fire started, all evacuating when the fire alarms sounded.

Firefighters were on the scene quickly, and found a fire that was producing "a considerable amount of black smoke visible from quite a distance away," Litwin said. Firefighters quickly got to the area where the fire was located and extinguish it, he said, adding that the fire "mostly involved roofing materials on top of the front of the building."
