FLUSHING, MI — In a quiet sanctuary on Main Street, more than 40 people came together Wednesday night, Oct. 1, bowing their heads in sorrow for the victims of the Grand Blanc Township mass killing.

For Nancy Thomas, 79, who has lived in Flushing for 29 years, the vigil at Flushing United Methodist Church carried a deeply personal weight.

Thomas said a close friend of hers had long attended the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on McCandlish Road, where Sunday’s mass killing took place. When she heard the news, her first thought was of her friend and her family.

“I was able to get a hold of her because I was concerned about her family and I didn’t know if they had been there,” Thomas said. “I told her it was a God thing that they weren’t there.”
