PORTER RANCH, La. (KPLC) - Some Louisiana high schoolers traded their books for boots today, learning firsthand how cattle are raised and what it takes to bring beef to the table.

The Vernon Parish Cattlemen’s Association held its 12th annual event today to show teens where beef really comes from. Their classroom for the day was Porter Ranch, a working cattle ranch spread over 800 acres.

Jack Bass, board member of the association, explains the purpose of this event.

“We want to teach them where beef comes from. It just doesn’t come from Walmart, Burger King, McDonald’s, or wherever. It starts right on this farm,” Bass said. “We’ve been doing this for 12 years, and we’ve had a lot of kids come back and say ‘I never knew this was going on in Vernon Parish,’ and it’s going on in all parish
