A review of the response to last summer's bushfires on Tasmania's west coast has highlighted a cramped firefighting headquarters, fatigue issues, frustrated volunteers and an overall fragmented response system.
The fires burnt more than 101,000 hectares in February and March, including 9,400 hectares in the Wilderness World Heritage Area, while fires came within several kilometres of the township of Zeehan.
It included three main firegrounds: Canning Peak, Yellowband Plain and Mount Donaldson.
The Canning Peak fire burnt 295 hectares of threatened native vegetation, including king billy pine and pencil pine, while the Mount Donaldson fire destroyed key organic soils.
The fires came after a period of "significant rainfall deficits" on the west coast, followed by 1,227 lightning strikes
