City of Canning mayor Patrick Hall believes the rules around what local government election candidates can put on their election statements need to be revisited.

Controversy erupted in the South West after four candidates pulled out of a meet-the-candidate event over another candidate’s profile.

Stephen Wells, who is running in the City of Busselton, has said “The National Socialist Network is an honourable organisation full of honourable men — I am proud to be one of them”.

He has also pledged to oppose “the globalist agenda” and advocate for a return to the “White Australia policy” if elected.

Speaking on Perth radio last week, Mr Hall said council elections gave people and groups a “free platform” to share their views across households.
