Calvin Duncan's story is well known now that he's on the airwaves, running for Orleans Parish Criminal Clerk of Court.
"I was wrongfully jailed for 28 years," said Duncan in the televised ad. Advertisement
Duncan was convicted of a murder in the 1980s and sentenced to life in prison at Angola. In 2011, after new evidence surfaced, he was allowed to plead to a lesser charge and walk free from jail.
He became a lawyer while in prison.
In 2021, his case took another turn.
His conviction was cleared by a judge in Orleans Parish, Judge Nandi Campbell.
Duncan says he was exonerated. But the state's Attorney General, Liz Murrill, is calling that exoneration "an inaccurate statement."
