WICHITA FALLS, Texas — The falls in the Falls have been turned off.

Wichita Falls' man-made waterfall structure is dried up, for the moment. The Texas city located about two hours northwest of Dallas announced last week that the artificial falls, which sits just off Interstate 44, has been closed for maintenance and "an evaluation of the overall structure."

It's not clear when the water will get turned back on, but the city says the falls "will need to remain off indefinitely until a long-term solution and plan have been developed," thanks to the overall condition of the structure.

An evaluation found damage to the façade of the 54-foot multi-level falls, which was built in the 1980s.

The real falls -- for which Wichita Falls was named -- washed away in the 1800s during a flood.
