Mugging, by a whale, is when one of these inquisitive and friendly animals comes up close to a boat and, sometimes, even circles it, and it's been happening off the Shoalhaven coastline a lot lately.

Humpback whales are generally the culprits behind the muggings, Jervis Bay Wild deckhand Kirrah Wandmaker said.

"We're seeing lots of muggings in the last few weeks, that's when the whale is interested in the boat and circles the boat," she said.

"We tend to find juveniles or calves are doing it the most.

"Some are interested in the boat because it's been a fair while since whaling days."
