After four decades, Sydney Symphony Under the Stars, a summer tradition of free concert music by the Sydney Symphony Orchestra , has been cancelled for 2026.

Parramatta City Council has pulled its $400,000 annual support from the Sydney Festival and the January extravaganza, a hugely popular community event which has historically closed the festival and set the tone for the orchestra’s annual season.

Council said it was proud to be the home of festivals, sports and entertainment and was now prioritising community events such as Australia Day and New Year’s Eve, and funding additional free, family-friendly events, such as Carols in Parramatta Park and a winter celebration.
