The Rural Fire Service (RFS) is fighting a bushfire that is threatening homes on the New South Wales North Coast.

An emergency alert has been issued for the blaze at Kangaroo Creek Road in Coutts Crossing, south-west of Grafton.

Clarence Valley RFS operational officer Scott McPherson said there were crews on the ground and three aircraft, including water bombers, overhead.

He said crews were working to protect homes and farm buildings.

"We have firefighters on the ground trying to gain close control of the fire and stop any further spread," Mr McPherson said.

"We are aware there is a small community of houses close by [on Bettong Drive], so we are throwing everything we’ve got at it."
