As the days get shorter and cooler, it’s time to plan our spring gardens. October is an ideal month to plant “underground stems” that will bloom in early spring. Underground stems are divided into bulbs (think daffodil and tulip), corms (crocus, gladiolus), tubers (caladium, dahlia) and rhizomes (iris, toad lily).

To simplify this discussion on selection, planting and maintenance, we’ll just call them all “bulbs.”
