KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Former Kansas City Mayor Kay Barnes will be the interim Jackson County executive, according to an overnight post from legislator Jalen Anderson.

Barnes will temporarily replace Frank White Jr. -- after he was recalled earlier this week.

The Jackson County legislature is set to make the official announcement later Thursday morning.

In 1999, Barnes made history as the first woman elected as mayor of KC. She is credited with leading projects to revitalize downtown.

Barnes retired from Park University in 2024 after working there for 17 years.

In Anderson's post, he said, "Mayor Kay Barnes will serve as a temporary county executive for up to 30 days. She has been appointed by the chair of the legislature."
