The Bureau of Indian Affairs placed over 1,100 employees on furlough on the first day of the federal government shutdown, drawing complaints from some leaders who say the government should uphold its commitments to tribes.

After lawmakers could not come to an agreement on funding legislation before midnight Oct. 1, the government shut down, leaving some in tribal communities wondering what that would mean for services such from the BIA, Bureau of Indian Education, Indian Health Services and other federal offices that deal primarily with tribal governments and communities.
