Essendon captain Zach Merrett has given a virtual farewell speech to the club’s faithful, winning a sixth and likely final Crichton Medal ahead of the AFL trade period in which the star onballer is set to seek a move to a rival club.

But the 30-year-old has acknowledged that as a “contracted player and captain” a deal must still be reached to satisfy the Bombers. Essendon were blindsided when news broke that Merrett had met with Hawthorn coach Sam Mitchell three weeks ago.

“The past two weeks have certainly been difficult for me, my family, and for many people in and around the football club,” said Merrett.
