Even as South Shore Line trains zip along the new set of tracks between Gary and Michigan City as part of the massive NWI Double Track project, other rail construction projects are either underway or planned.
In addition to the West Lake Corridor project, which is nearly complete, the railroad is addressing the bottleneck on the Metra system by adding a fourth set of tracks between Hegewisch and Millennium Station. That $200 million project has meant additional busing on an intermittent basis.
“We are building out that fourth track so we maintain four tracks all the way in,” Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District President and General Manager Michael Noland said. The South Shore Line will see new platforms, including at the Van Buren station, as part of the project.
