A 68-foot tall spruce tree from Sault Ste. Marie has been selected as Michigan's 2025 official state Christmas tree, the Michigan Department of Technology, Management & Budget said on Thursday, Oct. 2.

Sault Ste. Marie resident Linda Reid donated the tree, the state's 39th official Christmas tree, in honor of her grandparents, Lawrence and Nettie Richey, the department said in a press release.

“I was shocked when I found out our tree was selected as the 2025 state Christmas tree,” Reid said. “I don’t remember a time when the tree wasn’t in the backyard, but my grandparents played an integral role in my life since I was a young girl, so it means a lot to be able to make this donation in their honor.”

Last year's 60-foot spruce was donated by Eagle residents Rich and Dorcas Albertson.
