A Port Huron man accused of shooting three of his children was sentenced Thursday, Oct. 2, in an unrelated case for exposing his genitals to a child.

St. Clair County District Court Judge Mona Armstrong sentenced Jeffery Smerer, 44, to a year in jail for the misdemeanor indecent exposure charge to which he had previously pleaded guilty. Smerer will also be required to register as a sex offender.

"If I had the power to sentence you to more, I would," Armstrong said.

Smerer was originally scheduled to be sentenced on Sept. 11. That morning he was instead arrested after he reportedly shot and killed his 17-year-old son and severely injured two of his other children.
