Napanee District Secondary School students had shovels in hand to help plant more than 300 trees and shrubs as part of a two-year-long project to establish the first-ever Little Forest in Napanee.

Little Forests are “small but mighty” dense planting areas that feature native trees, shrubs and flowers to promote and enhance multi-species biodiversity, buffer effects of climate change and support local wildlife.

The Napanee Little Forest, a 100-metre-square area, is planted into compost and mulch that was prepared at the municipally-owned site — a green space next to J.J. O’Neill Catholic School in town — last fall.
