U.S. Special Operations Forces (SOF) deployed to Afghanistan in October 2001 to conduct unconventional warfare to topple the Taliban regime. The fall of the Taliban and the establishment of a new Afghan government in December 2001, the SOF campaign quickly transitioned from unconventional warfare to foreign internal defense and contingency operations employing irregular Afghan security forces to improve the security situation. Security forces are considered “irregular” when they do not fall within the formal security establishment, even if sanctioned and supported by the state. They are more of a militia as opposed to a standing and professional police or military force. [1] The fall of th
