The state of Louisiana purchased the United Plaza XII office building off Essen Lane for $21.5 million.

The deal was filed Wednesday with the East Baton Rouge Parish's Clerk of Courts office. The Secretary of State and state election offices are currently housed in the building and state ownership of the office will allow them to provide a more "cost effective" lease rate, according to a Division of Administration statement.

The 8585 Archives Ave. building is just down the road from the Louisiana State Archives.

LSU Online and Continuing Education is also housed at United Plaza XII. Other state tenants may relocate to the office in the future "as needs arise," the statement said.

The state plans to put a new roof on the building and exterior waterproofing.
