The first day of the government shutdown is leaving Marylanders in limbo as furloughed federal workers brace for missed paychecks.

“I just want the government to open back up and get back to work,” said John, a federal operations analyst who asked to be identified by only his first name.

“It affects so many civilians that have families,” said Paul, a retired federal employee who asked to be identified by only his first name.
