FIFA has responded to President Trump’s recent Oval Office remarks that he may move World Cup matches out of U.S. cities he deems unsafe. The governing body of the international sporting event says he has no authority to make such changes.
“With all due respect to current world leaders, football is bigger than them,” FIFA Vice President Victor Montagliani said. “Football will survive their regime, their government, their slogans.”
The U.S. is preparing to host the World Cup in 2026, with 11 U.S. cities slated to host matches, in addition to cities in Canada and Mexico.
The State Department said it will increase staffing at various U.S. facilities overseas to prepare for an anticipated influx in visa applications from those who wish to attend the World Cup.
