Police have named the attacker who struck at a synagogue in Manchester before he was shot dead.

In an update this evening, counter terrorism police have revealed, although formal identification is yet to take place, Jihad Al-Shamie, 35, is believed to be the attacker.

Al-Shamie is a British citizen of Syrian descent - and records show he was not known to authorities in relation to Prevent, the Government-led counter-terrorism programme.

This comes as the investigation into the attack outside the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue in north Manchester this morning, October 2, continues.
