UPSTATE, S.C. (WSPA) - The Department of Public Health confirmed an outbreak of measles in the Upstate, totaling eight reported cases.

Measles is highly contagious and poses a risk of spreading quickly in the Upstate, particularly in communities with low vaccination rates.

Symptoms include a facial rash that spreads throughout the body, lasting five to six days. Symptoms followed by the rash include fever, cough, rash, red eyes, and a runny nose.

The Department of Public Health said the virus spreads through the air when an infected person breathes, coughs, or sneezes, and can linger in enclosed spaces for up to two hours.
