GRANT COUNTY, Wash. (Gray News) - Authorities in Washington state say its bomb squad had to dispose of a live hand grenade that was found by a child.

According to the Grant County Sheriff’s Office , a 3-year-old boy came across the grenade in the front yard of their home on Monday.

The boy ended up bringing the grenade to his parents, who called 911 around 6:45 p.m.

Deputies said they had to call the Washington State Patrol Bomb Squad to assist as technicians determined the grenade was live.

The team carefully removed the device to a rural area north of Hartline and disposed of it.

Authorities said the grenade was of a type used during World War II.

It’s not known how the grenade ended up in the family’s front yard, nor how long it had been there, the sheriff’s office said.
