Syracuse, N.Y. — Over 60,000 drivers were issued warning tickets for speeding in Syracuse school zones during the first two weeks of a new city program aimed to slow down traffic.
Those tickets were sent out during a grace period, which expires Nov. 2.
But if the city enforced those 60,000 tickets, the fines would add up to $3 million.
The highest recorded speed in September was 78 mph in a 25-mph zone, said Sol Muñoz, a spokesperson for the city. About one-third of the people ticketed were going 15 miles over the speed limit, she said.
Since the first day of school this fall, Syracuse has been using the new cameras to capture drivers speeding through school zones throughout the city.
From Sept. 3 to Sept. 17, the city issued 59,950 speed warnings and 430 red light warnings, according
