A statewide special election is being held in early November in which California voters will decide on Proposition 50, or whether the state implements newly drawn congressional district maps.
Gov. Gavin Newsom announced the special election and Prop 50, the Election Rigging Response Act, in August. It’s in response to President Donald Trump and the White House’s push for Texas to redraw its congressional maps to flip five Democratic-held U.S. House of Representatives seats in favor of the GOP, a move that could benefit Republicans — and Trump — in the 2026 midterm elections.
By late August, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, a Republican, signed the state’s new congressional map into law, the Texas Tribune reported .
