A Bergen County man who had power of attorney over an older couple was arrested Thursday and accused of spending more than $200,000 of their money on himself, authorities said.

Anthony Gorga, 73, of Closter, was charged with second-degree misapplication of entrusted property, according to Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella.

Musella said Adult Protective Services contacted the prosecutor’s office in May to report the misappropriation of money belonging to an older couple.

A subsequent investigation revealed Gorga used his position of power of attorney to steal $200,000 for his own personal use over several years, Musella said.

Gorga was taken to the Bergen County Jail, where he was held pending a court hearing.

Attorney information was not listed in online court records.
