MADISON (WKOW) — More than 300 Dane County residents participated in a free transportation challenge this September, opting to bike, walk, ride the bus, and carpool instead of driving alone.

This initiative successfully avoided more than 17 tons of carbon dioxide emissions and saved over $12,000, according to a press release from the city of Madison.

The Smart Trips Challenge, organized by RoundTrip Greater Madison, aimed to reduce congestion and greenhouse gas emissions. Participants logged over 9,300 sustainable trips, marking the largest challenge yet.
