ROCHESTER, Minn.- Following recent public backlash to teachers across the country commenting on the death of Charlie Kirk, Vince Wagner, president of the Rochester Education Association says its important to remember the limits around a teacher's right to free speech.
He says teachers are prohibited from bringing partisan politics into the classroom by several state and federal laws including Minnesota's school bullying statute which prohibits students from being made to feel unwelcome due to race, ethnicity or creed among other factors.
The only time there are exceptions are in courses covering current events and even then Wagner says teachers are required to do so from an objective viewpoint.
