TOWNSEND, Mass. —

Townsend police are warning residents to be vigilant after a black bear was spotted in town.

One homeowner, who raises animals in his backyard, saw the bear from his window dragging one of his goats across the yard.

The 2-year-old goat, named Zephyr, was ultimately killed, and a chicken was slashed.

The Townsend couple that owned the goat was home with their 7-year-old daughter when the attack happened.

"It was really said. Just knowing the neighbors and they've had the goats for a while. I felt terrible for them," said Mary Beth Parise.

Residents on nearby Joyce Street say they also saw the bear.

"We saw it come between two houses and just strolled back into my backyard, then it took off," said Andrew Laurent.
