ELKHART, Kan. (KSNW) -- Morton County has reported a case of Pertussis.

The disease, more commonly known as Whooping Cough, is a highly contagious bacterial infection that is spread by droplets expelled through coughing or sneezing. The first symptoms may start as a cold that eventually develops into violent coughing, which can cause vomiting and exhaustion.

It gets its name "Whooping Cough" due to the deep inhalation sound created when someone with Pertussis tries to catch their breath. However, that sound isn't always present, especially in infants.

Although it can be treated with antibiotics, it is essential to catch it early to prevent severe symptoms. The best way to prevent contracting Pertussis is through vaccination.
