LA CROSSE, Wis. -- A penny for your thoughts? Maybe not at Kwik Trip.
The popular gas station chain announced Thursday that it will begin rounding down cash purchases to the nearest five cents in a push to go penny-free.
The move comes after the U.S. Department of Treasury announced earlier this year that it would stop producing pennies. The one-cent coins actually cost four cents to produce, and the U.S. stands to save $56 million by no longer minting them.
"At Kwik Trip, we’re committed to making everyday transactions simple and fair," Kwik Trip President and CEO Scott Zietlow said. " This change reflects our ongoing focus on guest experience. We apologize for any confusion this may create for our guests"
